Jean-Pierre Kunkel

Jean-Pierre Kunkel, born in 1950 in Liévin, France, developed a passion for art early on. After growing up in southern Germany, he studied free painting in Munich and Hamburg, where photorealism became his defining style. He mastered various techniques, from airbrush and photography to digital image editing and oil on canvas.

In 1978, Kunkel assisted French photographer Jean-Paul Goude in illustrating Jungle Fever, an experience that shaped his photorealistic approach. Based in Hamburg, he gained international recognition as a freelance illustrator for advertising and magazines, notably with Der Spiegel’s The Bush Warriors cover (2002/2008).

Kunkel’s works, based on digitally composed photographs, achieve a striking effect when translated into oil on canvas. His art explores idealization and aesthetics, much like his mentor Goude. His current focus spans four themes: Sea, Pool, Icons, and Advertising Pop-Art.
